VALLSS: Español assesses the Spanish language and literacy skills of students attending preschool through Grade 3. VALLSS: Español is available to all publicly funded schools throughout the Commonwealth and can be used in making instructional decisions in support of both Spanish and English literacy development. VALLSS: Español was developed to support educators whose students are learning Spanish, English, or both, in better understanding the whole of students’ literacy skills. For preschoolers, VALLSS: Español’s emphasis is on monitoring development and growth in areas critical to language and literacy acquisition. For students in elementary school, VALLSS: Español further addresses the early identification of students and target skills for the prevention of reading difficulties.

The assessment of coding, language comprehension, and processing that forms the common foundation for all of VALLSS remains relevant within the Spanish language and is incorporated throughout VALLSS: Español.
