VLP Overview

Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP) partners with educational and community leaders across the Commonwealth to improve literacy abilities for all students. Our team is dedicated to the translation of reading science to evidence-based literacy instruction in community and classroom settings. We do this work by engaging with policy makers, state-level education leaders, administrators, teachers, and families.

In partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), VLP is leading the design, development, and facilitation of a statewide literacy screener aligned with the most recent research in reading development and instruction. Our staff supports the implementation of the Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS). VLP maintains strong ties within the community and across the Commonwealth, engaging with every school division through structured outreach programs and ongoing professional development that empower both families and educators. VLP conducts ongoing research to examine the impact of specific curricula, teaching and coaching strategies, instructional supports, and professional development on teacher behaviors and student literacy outcomes. Our research and professional development teams are staffed by experienced educators and produces freely available instructional modules aligned with evidence-based literacy instruction as well as knowledge-based professional development training and coaching support to reading specialists and educators across the Commonwealth.
